Refract/Recurse
'Refract / Recurse' is a new audiovisual performance by Tijs Ham and Birk Nygaard. The abstract performance revolves around a digitally controlled analog feedback system and refracted laser beams. Together, they generate musical landscapes and shimmering lights. The laser beams are refracted, lighting up the space in a hypnotizing pulse while the music slowly builds up to an all-encompassing sonic wave. The audience is taken on an intense journey passing flashing shape-shifting objects, melodic interplay, mathematical prisms, and thunderous soundscapes.
With each performance, the piece takes on new characteristics as the development of the audio and visuals is an ongoing process. This results in a series of unique audiovisual experiences tailored to fit the requirements of the performance space.

For the sound setup, an analog mixer was modified, adding digital potentiometers to override the analog auxiliary potentiometers. This modification made it possible to have digital control over the feedback channels. Using an AKAI midi controller, rhythmic patterns could be played, recorded, and looped during a performance.
This principle of Digitally Controlled Analog Feedback (DCAF) was presented at the Musikkteknologidagene in 2017, organized by the Norwegian Academy of Music in collaboration with Notam
